Govt to raise TEPCO aid to ¥10 trillion

The government plans to raise the upper limit of its financial assistance to Tokyo Electric Power Co. from ¥5 trillion to between ¥9 trillion and ¥10 trillion as part of its reconstruction plan for the beleaguered company, according to sources.
The move is aimed at helping TEPCO, which is effectively under state control, ensure compensation payments to victims of the March 2011 nuclear crisis at its Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant, the sources said.
Through its business rehabilitation of TEPCO, the government aims to sell all of its shares during the 2030s, with profits from the share sale to be spent on decontamination work in areas affected by the nuclear accident.
